THE TEACHING PORTFOLIO OF MR. JOHNSON

ENGAGING THE IMAGINATION THROUGH COGNITIVE TOOLS

Education is more than the accumulation of facts; it is the development of the imagination. Imagination is the foundational spark that allows scientists to conceptualize new ideas, formulate hypotheses, and envision solutions to complex problems. My practice focuses on using cognitive tools (culturally embedded strategies, technologies, and mental techniques)to make the curriculum vivid, meaningful, and unforgettable for every student.

Who I Am

I am Mr. Johnson, a fourth-year student at the University of Calgary…

My approach to teaching combines Socratic questioning, imaginative education, building thinking classrooms, and low-floor, high-ceiling projects co-designed with students to better understand students’ needs and discover what is relevant and important to them. I am committed to creating inclusive, engaging learning environments that prioritize the curiosity of students and foster deep, critical thinking. In science and literacy, I want students to see that imagination is part of inquiry: it helps them ask better questions, make predictions, and explore new possibilities (e.g., the travels of an atom or the magic of exponential growth). By engaging students emotionally through storytelling and narrative, I aim to transform the classroom into a space of discovery and growth.
